What's the difference in cost between converting a spindle vs buying a new one?

it depends but i charge $400 labor for both plus parts,

most of the time for spindles, snouts, backing plates, brakes, bearings, grease and paint, it is around $1600 for everything

Are the back of the spindle hollow also and does sand get into the bearings?

the back side is solid, so not sand going down the spindle,  but i have seen some mfg in the past have full hollow and you  have to plug them up,  we use Kartek spindles
