Someone started a thread on RDP, and the misinformation was pure comedy!

I had ChatGPT make me this list the other day. Hopefully you'll find it handy. 👍🏼

🔹 General Purpose Conversational AIs

These are the “ChatGPT competitors” — broad, flexible, multi-use.

OpenAI → ChatGPT (GPT-5, DALL·E, Voice, etc.)

Google DeepMind → Gemini (text, images, code, multimodal)

Anthropic → Claude (safety-focused, big in enterprise)

Meta → LLaMA (open-source foundation models, free to use)

Mistral → Mixtral (smaller, fast, efficient open models)

Cohere → Command R (focused on retrieval + enterprise apps)

---

🔹 Image Generation

Turn text into art, photos, or graphics.

OpenAI → DALL·E 3 (built into ChatGPT)

MidJourney → High-quality, artistic images

Stable Diffusion (Stability AI) → Open-source, customizable

Adobe Firefly → AI inside Photoshop/Illustrator

---

🔹 Video Generation

AI that makes short films, ads, or animations.

Runway Gen-3

Pika Labs

Luma Labs

Synthesia (AI avatars for business presentations)

---

🔹 Audio & Voice

ElevenLabs → Ultra-realistic voices

OpenAI Voice Mode (in ChatGPT mobile)

VALL-E (Microsoft research)

Sonantic (voice for Hollywood & games)

---

🔹 Coding & Developer Tools

GitHub Copilot (Microsoft/OpenAI) → AI pair programmer

Cursor IDE → Coding-focused AI editor

Tabnine → AI code completion

Replit Ghostwriter → AI for web/app dev

---

🔹 Specialized / Niche AI

Character.AI → Roleplay/chat personas

Perplexity → Search + AI answers (alternative to Google)

Notion AI → Productivity/writing inside Notion

Jasper AI → Marketing & copywriting

Descript → Podcast & video editing with AI

⚡️ The Trend: Everyone’s racing toward multimodal AI — single systems that can handle text, images, video, voice, and reasoning in one place. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude are already moving in that direction.

What about elon's AI engine, Grok?

breakdown of OpenAI vs. xAI (Grok) — tech and leadership side by side:

---

⚡️ Leadership & Culture

OpenAI (Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Mira Murati)

Mission-driven, structured around “develop AGI safely.”

Heavy governance and oversight (board, nonprofit structure, Microsoft partnership).

Altman pushes fast deployment + fundraising; Murati/Pachocki/Brockman push technical R&D.

Runs like a hybrid: nonprofit ethics + for-profit speed.

xAI (Elon Musk)

Musk’s vision: build “truth-seeking AI” (less censorship, less guardrails).

Startup culture — small, tight-knit, less bureaucracy.

Directly tied into Musk’s ecosystem: X (Twitter), Tesla, SpaceX.

Leadership style: chaotic, move fast, break stuff.

---

🧠 Tech Stack

OpenAI

GPT family (GPT-3.5, GPT-4, GPT-4o).

Multimodal: text, voice, image input/output.

DALL-E (image generation), Whisper (speech-to-text).

Trained on vast datasets + Microsoft Azure supercomputers.

API-first, then productized as ChatGPT.

Safety layers (RLHF, alignment teams).

xAI (Grok)

Grok-1 (released 2023), Grok-1.5 series, Grok-2 in progress.

Multimodal work is underway but less mature than GPT-4.

Tightly integrated with X/Twitter data → real-time access to trending posts, conversations, news.

Positioned as “edgier ChatGPT” (looser filters, witty style).

Runs on a custom NVIDIA GPU cluster Musk ordered (tens of thousands of H100s).

---

🚀 Deployment & Strategy

OpenAI

Big enterprise deals (Microsoft 49% stake in the for-profit).

ChatGPT = consumer product + API powering thousands of apps.

Emphasis on trust, regulation engagement, global adoption.

Balances public rollouts with cautious safety reviews.

xAI (Grok)

Directly embedded into X Premium+ subscription → consumer-first, no middle layer.

Plays on “free speech” branding: fewer moderation constraints.

Faster to ship updates, less red tape.

Competes directly with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc.

---

⚖️ Key Differences in Philosophy

OpenAI: Safety, governance, slow down if risks too high.

xAI/Grok: Truth-seeking, minimal filters, ride the chaos of live data.

OpenAI’s strength: world-class research & scaling.

xAI’s strength: integration with live social media + Musk’s hardware/resources.

---

👉 Bottom line: OpenAI has the stronger research bench and infrastructure, but xAI’s Grok is scrappier, faster to integrate real-time internet data, and deliberately less filtered.
They’re playing different games: OpenAI = “responsible AGI leader,” xAI = “rebel challenger with live data.”

I tried Grok. Didn't care for it. Since it's mainly just a ChatBot, it felt condescending to me.

Claude for coding is great too. I have the $200/month pro plan through work that I set loose on more mundane tasks

Do they have a free version??

It looks like they do but the free/lower plan models aren't as good. After certain amount of use even the expensive plans get downgraded to the cheapo models but it takes quite a bit

When it writes code you can even have it write tests against it so it self validates. Its pretty cool - still screws you quite a bit if you aren't careful though. Still need to review everything thoroughly

The "Engineers" here at work use AI to create Inspection Plans.

I use my brain, look at the parts and prints and create an Inspection Plan.

10/10 Inspection Plans are not submitted if AI was used... but thanks for wasting everyone's time!

I just played around with the free version of Deevid AI and it was ok. Made a photo in a some movement. It adds some of your descriptions but not all of them. Not impressed enough to spend $10 a month on it.

I just use the free versions of everything. I'm just a mere mortal. No way I'm gonna ask anything that will challenge these things! 😁

ChatGPT (free) limits you the same way as well. I need to try one of these coding Ai's. I've been playing around with ChatGPT and site caching lately...

Wow. Thanks for the tip!!!

MUCH better than ChatGPT for coding. I hit the 5 hour limit on the free plan last night. 😜

The split window view is awesome.

👍🏼👍🏼

There you go! Install the VS Code plugin - you can ask it to do stuff right from the terminal

Funny you say that...

😁

It's what I used to save/create the file!

I just signed up with the free version though. I'm ok with just a copy and paste.

I don't do a whole lot of coding...

I know just enough about running a VM, to get myself in trouble...

I just enjoy building websites really. Having my own server make it a lot easier. Most shared servers (like GoDaddy and all that), won't allow you to change anything!

I can modify my own server, as needed. 👍🏼
