Power steering and pressure relief

Got a new power steering reservoir from kartek and it has a pressure relief port that can be drilled out. Got me thinking… do we need to have pressure relief on our power steering systems? Current reservoir was the basic HOWE can. Switching to a reservoir w/ spin on filter.
 
Depends on how much you fill it and if water gets in the system. The system on my Jeep is sealed, it hisses when opened, but it’s never leaked out, even when spending hours rock crawling (lots of heat) heeled over on its side. I occasionally check for moisture, but isn’t an issue.

PS messes suck. Keeping everything sealed is good to keep dirt out, and oily mess in.
 
We ran a P/S reservoir/filter with a pressure relief on our Class 1 car, but the car went 1000 miles at a time. I have the same HOWE P/S reservoir/filter on my car and no relief. Not necessary.

Ricky was saying it was a good idea to save the pump / system from too much pressure buildup 🤷‍♂️. He said the Howe system has it built into the cap (radiator style cap)… my old car had a gear one reservoir and didn’t have any sort of pressure relief

@parker@gearone any input on this?

The pressure comes from the fluid getting hot. Duning won't get the fluid hot enough. Racing and prerunning will.

Pressure relief valve or a port to dump overflow PS fluid.
Pressure relief valve is good. Can save a PS line from going as protects in pressures spikes at full lock etc. also helps the PS pump live.

an overflow dump, I don't run one on my car. fluid doesn't get hot enough and just another place for sand to go...

Isn’t that in the high pressure circuit and shunts back to the reservoir though?

Yep, Ricky is my sales guy at Kartek. Good dude, text him and my parts are ready for pick up when I walk in or shipped same day. I don't think a relief valve is necessary for a sandrail PS system.
