Thinking about selling the motorhome and buying a diesel truck and a toy hauler. Want to do some traveling and be able to unhook the truck to run around at our destinations. Not sure where to start here on what size truck and what size toy hauler to buy. I see a lot of these big units with slides and triple axles. I guess my first question would be can I get away with a double axle or does it have to be a triple axle. I see a lot of them have a 12-ft garage inside but I think I saw one with a 13-ft garage. When you start getting too big on these things I would assume there is an issue fitting into campground and RV places. Going to retire soon and would love to just jump in the truck and trailer and go take off for a couple of months. While we still can. It does look to me like the quality of a toy hauler will be less than even our older national tradewinds motorhome. Guess that is part of the deal. What brands and years should I be looking for in toy haulers? Thinking we would want something with slides in it for more space. Would a Chevy Duramax truck single rear tire be enough to pull one of these big boys. I know my dad had a 2006 Chevy truck with the Duramax that I really liked. Don't necessarily care for the Dodge or the Ford trucks. The newer Chevys look pretty nice but not sure about those diesel engines.

Stick with the Motorhome and tow your Honda behind it to run around or sell that Honda and get something (Like a Jeep). Once I retire or make the switch to a big car I will be going from the truck and trailer to the coach and trailer/ tow behind.

Just think of all the fights your going to prevent if you pull into a tight campground with the Motorhome / Jeep you just drop the jeep at the entrance and back into the spot or even pull in straight if it's dark and she drives the jeep in. Versus. having to back in a 30' rig between two trees, then unhook, level set up camp and reverse that in the morning.

I have minimal experience with motorhomes. I used to borrow my parents motorhome when I was younger but since then I have always preferred a truck and trailer.

I recently upgraded my truck and trailer. I went from a 2008 Chevy 2500HD Diesel SRW to a 2022 GMC 3500HD Diesel SRW. The fifth wheel is a 21 Grand Design Momentum 381M about 15k lbs dry, 3 slides, 43' long, triple axle with a separate 15ft garage. I can fit my 4 seat SU ultralight in the garage but I have to remove the wing trunk. I wish I would have been more patient and found a 16ft or 18ft garage model. The interior is really spacious and have not had issues with anything yet. It seems like these trailers are built well but I've only had it since February. We are living in it full time now. Definitely not a small trailer but its very comfortable and built for 4 seasons. We also had our eye on some of the Genesis Fifth wheel toy haulers. A friend from our group has one and he really likes it. He also has Gen 4 Funco.

The tow capacity on these 2020 and newer GM diesel trucks is over 30k lbs and in some configurations up to 36k lbs. I am not a fan of Dodge or Ford Trucks as well. I had to upgrade my truck since max tow capacity on the old truck was 16k pounds and had a tall lift so I would have had to completely change the suspension, wheels/tires, and probably some transmission work. The new truck has a 10 speed Allison trans and the engine has plenty of torque. The engine is super quiet and the interior is super comfortable. A lot of new technology that is taking me a while to get used to but its useful.

My gf and I live in Utah so we will be hitting different campgrounds this summer and fall. Most campgrounds we have looked up had 45' spaces for longer rigs to pull into. We are staying at our first campground in park city next month. The size of the trailer might be an issue when we decide to go out to Yellowstone, grand teton, or Yosemite but we have not planned those trips yet.

I did a lot of research looking for a toy hauler that would fit my class 1 car (weight and dimensions) and still be able to fit in most state / federal campgrounds. I ended up purchasing an ATC 2917, which was one of the only trailers that would fit the bill. I didn't want a motorhome because we use the truck in the dunes and camping. I am pulling it with a '21 2500hd. High quality trailer that does everything we need.

Do you remove all the furniture to get your car in?

You asked for the smallest Toy Hauler that would fit your Funco;

Genesis used to make a really nice Front Bath model as well, but only made a few of them.

You didn't mention if a 5th wheel was mandatory or if you would be okay with a Bumper Pull. If you're going to be parking in Camp sites, you want as small as possible no matter what you're doing. Not sure if many newer, smaller 5th wheels would allow for the Funco. I think you'd have to be over 35' for that to work, could be wrong.

ATC quality is nowhere what it used to be for what they are charging, if you look in that direction. I was shopping for a new one in 2020, walked away fast once I got into one to see them.

Rear HappiJac bed and dinette retract to the ceiling, side-table folds against the wall, and two swivel chairs move behind the car. That's an amazing feature of this trailer, you can configure it on the l-track system so loading a car is really easy. My car is 93.25" wide and 195" long, it fits great.

My motorhome is 36 ft 6 in. It has the cat 3126 so it is pretty gutless. Empty that coach only weighs 23,000 lb. I have driven it empty to San Diego from Phoenix and on some of the hills it is terrible. Can't imagine trying to tow anything and travel any distance with it. Not saying a different coach and towing isn't still an option I guess.

I assume you have load leveler bars with that setup? Looks compact and simple I like it. What does that trailer weigh? My Funco weighs right at 2500. I assume your car is a little heavier. I would also want to have a storage tank for about 80 gallons of fuel. What motor is in your truck? And what is the tow rating of the truck?

I would be open for a bumper pull or a fifth wheel. Years ago we had an old '80s alpha toy house. 28 ft bumper pull trailer. Believe it or not I shoved an RZR 800 and my Funco in that trailer.

Yes, load levers and bags on the truck. Its the 6.6-liter diesel, and it pulls it fully loaded easy, but doesn't like over 70mph.

Weights below for my '21 2917. My car is about 3,200 + gas in the car. Trailer has a 50 gal fuel tank.

GVWR 13200
UVW -7600
Water -834
Gas -216
Propane -34
Net 4516

If you are wiling to go 5er and older, the Gearbox 335FS could fit a Funco IIRC. Owned one years ago and had decent luck with it behind a '06 Dmax SRW truck.

Well when your flat towing a car and know that there is a grade coming up you can always just unhook and drive two vehicles to the top.

Another thing to remember while traveling across country together in the cab of a truck, She wants a snack, She has to potty or she is just tired of listening to your music. She can't get up walk to the back of the coach and chill. That is a lot different than 4 hours of her sitting in the passenger seat with her arms crossed

I Got you,
Just purchased a Freightliner Super C
I got a Small 47 Foot Toy hauler with a small 17' Garage, with a F350 on 37'' that floats in the dunes,
