I have a 2018 Maverick X3 Turbo R. It has a tuner and running 195 hp so same as a RR. It is mainly driven by my young adult kids when we go to the dunes or on trails. The secondary clutch just starting making a god awful noise and the belt is slipping when starting from a stop. I put a new belt on and nothing changed. At about 20 mph and above all sounds and performs normal. I'm pondering if I should rebuild the OEM clutches or get an aftermarket upgrade kit. I see the STM kits look pretty nice. Or KWI does a send in program to rebuild and upgrade. There are more expensive options out there that I don't think I need. I also see a much cheaper Mother Clutcher option but I don't think I want to go that route. I would love to save some money but I don't want the hassle of a clutch failure out on the trail or after a long drive to get to the dunes. Any input? Anyone running the STM or done the KWI upgrade? Thanks!

I would be curious about this also. I’ve just passed 3500 miles on my 2017.

Muther Clutcher is the best deal and just replace both the primary and secondary. On their Web Site they had some deals for first time buyers where you would get a pretty good discount. We have three in camp, mine being the newest and all have preformed flawless so far.

I have done all three... if the shives of your clutches are worn or uneven, have at least 5k miles on them or you run harder aftermarket belts it will probably cost more to have them rebuilt with new shives plus whatever else they need than completely new ones from MC. High performance aftermarket clutches in my opinion are overpriced and you have to spend time to dial them in. Then once you do it may be ideal in certain situations but not others and they are not as maintenance free as most people would like to think.

Good info. I'm on the bubble as to just ordering the MC or pony up for the STM. I can buy 3 of the MC sets for what the STM cost. 🤑🤑 Just not sure if it's that much better? It sure looks better from what I've seen and researched. I like how STM gets all your car info, mods, tire size, etc and sets it up based on that. I'm going to call the shop near me that sells them and the KWI tomorrow and see what they have to say.

So after some more research I’ve decided to try a different route. After looking closer at my secondary clutch I can see the rollers are broken and one is missing completely. So I’m going to replace the rollers and washers and see if that doesn’t fix my issue. I ordered the rollers, washers and the tools needed to pull the pins and separate the clutch halves from Hunterworks. $360 for everything. Most of it was the tooling. Hopefully it goes well. I’ll report back when I’m done.

Constant clutch maintenance is very important in the CVT clutches. Its a heck of a lot cheaper to throw wear buttons, rollers and guides than replace the whole thing.

STM is more of a high performance clutch that takes even more maintenance. Sure they may setup for what you tell them but you still have to tune it on the car.

How many miles on your clutches? What maintenance have you done to this point? Look at your clutch faces and see if they are grooved or warped.

I replaced my clutches in Glamis with KWI. Did the float mod and their clutch kit as well. My clutches had around 5,000 miles on them and the clutch faces were grooved.

I installed the replacement rollers and cleaned up the faces and all seems good now. It actually was pretty easy to do. I’m very happy with the tools and parts I bought from Hunterworks. They make quality stuff!
