Sandboarding?

Hey everyone,

I was planning a trip out to southern California, Joshua Tree area.  I really wanted to try sandboarding.   Can anyone recommend the best spot to try this?  Also, is there a place to rent the sandboards?  Do you need an ATV to access the dunes?  Any help would be appreciated!  Thanks.

At Great Snad Dunes in Co, which is a wilderness it is popular....but then a sheet of cardboard or snow sled works

Hiking up the bigger dunes will be less than fun.  You can access in from Osbourne Lookout with the other tourists who go for short hikes.

I've first hand seen people try and sandboard at Glamis.  Always a dismal failure.  I think you need really steep and tall dunes that Glamis doesn't really have.  Joshua Tree is also about 5 hours away?  Maybe Dumont is closer?

Most people these days just do stuff for a social media photo op so it could work regardless depending on your needs.

gilmores was renting sand boards at one point but i dont know if they still are. you would need a big dune to even make it worth it. the sand in glamis is normally pretty soft not the best for sliding. we take a snow sled out with us alot and the kids play on that. we found on big dude and the adults tried it, not much speed going down at all and the hike back up was hard, we found another one where we took on of the SxS down to pick up the person that was sliding down. tried to attach a little video trying to slide down what looks like a smaller dune was was actually kinda steep.

We've done it!

I had a stubborn friend from Belarus that begged me to go to Glamis, and asked if he can bring a snowboard to ski the dunes. I should've known he was serious. Wouldn't stop asking about the approaching date and kept asking what to wear. Yea, he wore the complete opposite. Complete with rubber ducky shorts and Hawaiian shirt. Most annoying 22yr old at the time but I love the guy. He's one legit crazy mofo. Made our day watching him get it! 

We used the steep dune to the right of Olds, you know, the one with the sharp wall edge. It was the steepest I could suggest because, again even that far into the idea, I still didn't expect it to work. My crew had a hell of a laugh watching me trying to get him to the top with board and boots double riding my stock yfz450. They didn't think I could get him to the top, I will admit it took skill not to tip backwards and keep the momentum going by zig zagging the quad, full lean forward, he was behind me riding me like a damn horse! It was a hoot and everyone was shocked that after a 5min ascend, we made it to the very top! It was the funniest double ride I've ever done.

Oh, and yes he slid all the way to the bottom. Shocked all of us! It was the slowest slide but a slide none the less. Not sure it was the speed he anticipated but it had every effect of water or snow, just slow motion lol

That gives me hope. I was envisioning a guy on a snowboard being pulled by a waterski rope attached to a car. Any suggestions as to waterski rope length if someone was going to try this? 50’ 100’ longer?

Definitely 50ft. Won't take much. The injury is not worth the squeeze. Be sure to report back!

I’ve seen towing a sand board work, the tow rope is hooked directly to the front of the board, an additional rope with a handle is attached to the board to hold on to / “steer.” Pretty much straight lines with little to no “steering” going on.

If you’re going to give it a go and not give up after your first try bring a ton of wax, reapply after each run. 
Do you need an ATV or SXS to surf the dunes, no but you don’t “need” toilet paper either…

Iv boarded behind a quad and sandrail before, the rangers dont like it, got pulled over and warnings both times. For sliding down hills, i havnt seen it mentioned yet but they do make waxes to make it slide over sand better, use that and it works way better, you can pick up some speed, try it at china wall and its a good time
