As a father, it's the most heart-breaking thing I've ever watched on film.
It broke me by bringing out feelings and emotions I'd never experienced before.
It also helped me to understand how my HS best friend's parent's felt when he was arrested and convicted for a series of armed robberies/heists inspired by watching gangster/mafia movies. The guy was a model-looking kid with the gift of charisma and gaff (he banged the hottest teach on campus the night after graduation). He was a semi-pro flat-land freestyler before HS and talented soccer player. Yet the "romanticism, respect, and superiority" of that Italian gang/life was too attractive to him. The guy never studied or opened a book yet had a 3.9gpa when we graduated. I'll never forget the call I received 18-20 months after we graduated informing me that he had been caught. He served 10 years.
When his he was released, his parents welcomed him with open arms as if he had just been born. Like a newborn baby. No judgement, no anger, no nothing negative. They were over the moon to have their only son back home. It was difficult for me to understand how parents could be so loving despite this monumental mistake. The entire family showered him with love. Until today, I could never understand how that could be. My parent's would've disowned me and left me to my own devices because of the shame (at least, that's what I believe).
