While most people on here are upgrading their transaxle to a sequential my project has been to go to a 2d.
The Baja Shop came with a Mega Sand transaxle and I knew it was the weakest link in the power train.
So when it broke I bought a used 2d and went to work with the modifications required to make it work. I figured Relocating the radiator, different trans mounts and axles would be the biggest issues.
Here’s some pictures.

I have a few more things to finish up and then off to Glamis next weekend.
I’ve tested everything except for the axle spacers. The grease fittings work but I don’t know anyone that has used them to “stretch” existing axles.

It’s done. Took her around the block today and ran it through all the gears. Everything seems fine. Looks like I’m ready for this weekend in Glamis. Do some easy break in rides and play a little Sandy Golf.

Happy to report that all went pretty good on the first outing with the 2d transaxle upgrade.
The radiator relocation worked well in the dunes with the temperature staying at 180. On a run to Duner’s Diner the temperature climbed slightly to 200. I think the slight rise in temperature was due to the air flowing more over the radiator and not through it because of it being at a more horizontal angle.
The 2d transaxle worked well but had a little trouble getting into 3rd gear. I need to spend some time adjusting the new cables more to make it better.
On the way back from Duner’s Diner a buddy noticed grease all over the transaxle on the driver’s side. Further investigation revealed that a zirc fitting was leaking in the new spacers between the CV and trans flange. The ball was not seating properly. So a piece of plastic bag over the fitting with a zip tie to hold it and we were off and running.
Overall I’m pretty happy with everything but my wallet is still trying to recover.
