If it's been a couple seasons since the trans was out, or seal replaced, yes. If it could get in through the bottom, it would likely leave that way too.

The sand is coming in from the top. The bent sheet metal piece bolted to your adapter is typically enough for the bottom. Clean up the mess, install a new seal, and plug the highlighted holes with a finger full of silicone.

It would be handy to have an "armorer's" wrench to tighten the castle nut on the buffer tube, a roll pin set for the bolt catch pin and trigger guard. But, you could easily do it with out.
